5 NIGHTLY HABITS FOR A CLEANER KITCHEN EVERY MORNING

The kitchen is the centerpiece of the home. And like any good centerpiece, it should be well organized and beautifully displayed. I know for me, waking up to a clean, tidy kitchen sure gets my day off to a great start. Nothing is worse than coming down to cook breakfast and finding last night’s pots, pans and stuck-on food greeting me. So for today’s blog post I am highlighting 5 things to do each night so you can wake up to a clean and organized kitchen each day.

5 NIGHTLY HABITS FOR CLEANER KITCHEN-43

1. RUN THE DISHWASHER NIGHTLY

If you have a family of 4 or more, chances are you use just about every plate and cup you own, every single day. And since I’m a fan of many modern conveniences (like a dishwasher), my hand-washing is only utilized for pots and pans. That means serving breakfast and dinner at home leads to using a minimum of 8 plates, 8 glasses, 8 forks, and any array of pots, pans, utensils, serving dishes, etc. So loading up the dishwasher after breakfast and again after dinner leaves me with a full load. I made it a habit to run it every night and love that every morning I have everything I need to begin the whole family-feeding circus again. If you don’t have as many mouths to feed as I do, run the dishwasher as soon as it fills. And be sure to not overcrowd it. Overcrowding the dishwasher leads to poor cleaning of each item which kinda defeats the purpose.

2. DECLUTTER YOUR COUNTERTOPS

The Healthy Kitchen Guide (have you gotten yours yet?) has an entire exercise on an easy technique to declutter your countertops. In short, only have out the things that you use frequently. This will give your kitchen a sleek, minimalistic look which translates into a cleaner kitchen.

3. SWEEP NIGHTLY

I know, who wants to sweep every night? But with little people running around and dropping crumbs, sweeping nightly will make keeping the floors clear much easier. Also, spot clean spilled messes right away. The longer you wait the tougher it will be to clean it later.

4. SANITIZE THE SINK EACH NIGHT

After cleaning up from dinner and loading the dishwasher, sanitize the sink with your favorite non-toxic kitchen cleaner. Or sprinkle baking soda in the sink and give it a good scrub. Be sure to dry the sink after you clean it so there are no water spots.

5. EMPTY THE DISHWASHER 1ST THING IN THE MORNING

I know this post was about what you should do nightly, but this is the first thing you should do the next day before starting the day. Much like putting away clean laundry, putting clean dishes away may not be your favorite activity, but doing so first thing in the morning before you start cooking breakfast will make things run smoother. And since you are loading up after breakfast anyway, this is the best way to keep dishes from accumulating in the sink.
