HOW BECOMING A WIFE AND MOM IN COLLEGE IGNITED MY PASSION FOR YOUR FAMILY’S HEALTH

HOW BECOMING A WIFE AND MOM IN COLLEGE IGNITED MY PASSION FOR YOUR FAMILY'S HEALTH

I don’t know what your college experience was like, but I can assure you mine was completely different. In fact, I’m sure my experience was SO different from yours that you may think it’s some teenage novel that I’ve made up. I assure you its not. If you’ve read my about section, you have a general idea about why I started Pinch of Health. Thankfully, the blog has been experiencing steady growth so I wanted to check back in to let any newcomers know who I am and why I’m passionate about your family’s health.       COLLEGE The somewhat short version of my college experience is that I met my now-husband, Chris (the one that gave me a fright a few months ago), my freshman year at Spelman College in 2003 through a mutual friend. To be more specific, we met on a shuttle bus that picked students up to go to bible study. As a freshman at an all-girls school, I was actually looking forward to having no male-related drama for a little while and dating right away was not on the table..   Instead, I had plans to join student government as I had previously and had

WHY A STEAM MOP IS YOUR BEST NONTOXIC FLOOR CLEANING SOLUTION

WHY A STEAM MOP IS YOUR BEST NONTOXIC FLOOR CLEANING SOLUTION

Last time I told you to never, ever use a Swiffer® again. If you missed it, you can read all the reasons why here. Several of you told me you either had a Swiffer®  or were planning to purchase one so I’m so happy that post was right on time.   But I did feel like I left you hanging a little bit because I didn’t tell you how to go about cleaning your floors in a chemical-free, non-toxic, but still easy and effective way. Those that have the Healthy Kitchen Guide already know what I recommend. Say hello to my little friend. The steam mop.   MEET THE STEAM MOP My number one recommendation for cleaning hard, sealed floors (think laminate, tile, vinyl, and sealed wood) is to use a steam mop. Steam mops work to clean your floors by using…you guessed it, steam. Many people are leery of not using chemicals to clean the germs off your floors and I get it. So now let me get a little more scientific to ease your worries.   HOW STEAM MOPS WORK Ever have a fever? A fever is your body’s way of increasing your body temperature in an effort

NEVER USE A SWIFFER® IN YOUR HOME AGAIN

NEVER USE A SWIFFER® IN YOUR HOME AGAIN

Like most of you, I’m always on the lookout for anything that will help me keep my home clean. From reading books to purchasing new products, I’m on the hunt. Also like many of you, I too am guilty of following into the trap of excitement that happens when you think a product is the answer to your needs. For me, no product laid a better trap than the Swiffer® line of products. But this post is all about why I would never allow another one to enter my home. And obviously, I don’t encourage you to either. Let’s take a look.     WHY I CHOSE A SWIFFER® When I saw the Swiffer® Steam Mop and the Swiffer® WetJet being that I have two kids that are highly active and love playing outside (and who I just can’t seem to get to take their shoes off at the door consistently), this product was an easy purchase.   I mean, just look at the claim on their website.     While I’m sure none of you have such extreme tracks of mud on their floors, who wouldn’t want to “clean muddy messes with ease”?   So I set my sights on

5 TIPS FOR LOVING YOUR HOME MORE

5 TIPS FOR LOVING YOUR HOME MORE

In the last post I shared 6 reasons it’s important to love your home. Click here to read that post. Today’s post is all about 5 ways that you can do just that!         PREPARE IT FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY LIKE YOU WOULD FOR COMPANY   When it comes to our kids, we wouldn’t dream of sending them out looking a hot mess. But for some reason, when it comes to our homes it is too easy to think that unless we’re having company it doesn’t matter how our homes look. Yet when we’re expecting guests, we pull out all the stops.   We make their beds just right, we clean the puppy’s wet nose smears off the windows, we organize the refrigerator and finally break down all those amazon boxes that have been slowly taking over. And while these are all commendable things to do for company, what pulling out all the stops for company only is honestly saying, is that your company’s comfort and satisfaction in your home is more important than that of yours or your family’s. I have definitely been guilty of feeling that way, even if only subconsciously. But after reading this

6 REASONS IT’S IMPORTANT TO LOVE YOUR HOME

6 REASONS IT'S IMPORTANT TO LOVE YOUR HOME

I love two of dictionary.com’s definitions of home that says it’s a ‘place of refuge’ and ‘the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered’. I know sometimes the word domestic makes some people cringe as they imagine being on hands and knees scrubbing baseboards. But to me, those are both beautiful definitions of a home because they remind us that the home is a place that we are to take refuge and where all of our non work-related affections are centered.   Whether you live in an apartment, a townhouse, a flat or an estate, your home is a place where you should love and be loved, feel safe and foster great health for you and your family. Here are 6 reasons why.       PROTECTION FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLDYour home is the place you and your family go to escape the cares of the world. Whether at work, daycare, the grocery store or school, your family is faced with many uncertainties as it relates to their health and their happiness. Germs threaten their immune systems on a daily basis and daily stresses are ever-present. Your home however, is the environment in which they can truly take a

A BOOK WORTH READING: THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF TIDYING UP

A BOOK WORTH READING: THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF TIDYING UP

Looking to read something life-changing? While on vacation in California with my hubby last week, I picked up this NY Times best seller and let me tell you, it has indeed began to change my life.   I am great when it comes to keeping up with health standards and maintaining a toxic-free environment. But I have to admit, when it comes to keeping the home perfectly tidy…I’m not as proficient.   Have you ever gone to clean something and then turn around hours later and find yourself cleaning the exact same thing (hello kitchen and kids’ rooms) all over again?   Or do you find yourself always in a tug of war between you and clutter? Laundry washed and dried…win for me, laundry remains unfolded and then somehow gets mixed in with dirty laundry so you have to wash everything all over again (you know…like I observed at someone else’s house 😉)…win for clutter.   Please, please, please do yourself and your family a favor and pick up this book. It was not only immensely helpful (and life-changing as it relates to keeping a tidier home) but it was also an entertaining read.        the life-changing magic of

HOW MY HUSBAND’S HOSPITAL VISIT CHANGED THE WAY I OPERATE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR

HOW MY HUSBAND'S HOSPITAL VISIT CHANGED THE WAY I OPERATE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR

This isn’t my typical health post, but two days ago I rushed my husband to the hospital and the affects that visit had on me as a person and entrepreneur were profound. Yesterday I posted about it on my personal Facebook page, and since many of you have been on this journey with me for some time now, I thought it prudent to share with you as well. If any of you are aspiring entrepreneurs or you just aspire to be a better anything, I hope this post will inspire you to live your best life as well. Read below for the full post.     Yesterday was scary.       It started out as any other day. Woke up this morning, prayed, got a workout in, cooked breakfast, packed lunches, packed bookbags, signed papers, combed hair and kissed them goodbye. I felt normal, they looked normal. No eerie feeling that something scary would happen.   But a few hours later, my 6’8” tall husband, Chris, called me in a panic as he was struggling to breathe and feeling weaker by the minute. I rushed him to the hospital not knowing what was wrong. He’s very healthy, but something

5 NIGHTLY HABITS FOR A CLEANER KITCHEN EVERY MORNING

5 NIGHTLY HABITS FOR A CLEANER KITCHEN EVERY MORNING

The kitchen is the centerpiece of the home. And like any good centerpiece, it should be well organized and beautifully displayed. I know for me, waking up to a clean, tidy kitchen sure gets my day off to a great start. Nothing is worse than coming down to cook breakfast and finding last night’s pots, pans and stuck-on food greeting me. So for today’s blog post I am highlighting 5 things to do each night so you can wake up to a clean and organized kitchen each day.     1. RUN THE DISHWASHER NIGHTLY If you have a family of 4 or more, chances are you use just about every plate and cup you own, every single day. And since I’m a fan of many modern conveniences (like a dishwasher), my hand-washing is only utilized for pots and pans. That means serving breakfast and dinner at home leads to using a minimum of 8 plates, 8 glasses, 8 forks, and any array of pots, pans, utensils, serving dishes, etc. So loading up the dishwasher after breakfast and again after dinner leaves me with a full load. I made it a habit to run it every night and love that

WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT EGGS (OR MILK!) ON YOUR REFRIGERATOR DOOR

WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT EGGS (OR MILK!) ON YOUR REFRIGERATOR DOOR

The temperature of your refrigerator likely never crosses your mind. After shopping for meat, dairy, fruit, vegetables and condiments you throw them all in there and breathe a sigh of relief. Just like folding and putting clothes away can be the most draining part of doing laundry, putting the groceries away after planning, driving to the store, shopping and bringing them home can also be a drag. But when it comes to food safety, there is more to keep in mind.     The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that when it comes to protecting your family from food borne illness, one of your most effective tools is the refrigerator. But throwing the food in haphazardly doesn’t ensure it does the best job.   This is especially true for highly perishable items like eggs and milk. The temperature of your refrigerator varies based on location. And although it appears that the door of the fridge has a compartment especially made for eggs, do not place them here.   The truth is, the door is the warmest area of the refrigerator. It is the most exposed to the warmer air as you open and close it and experiences the greatest temperature fluctuations.
